Let me tell you about these:

Corner Bakery Cafe in Columbia MD

These are yummy and crispy and cinnamon-y and toasty and sugary and wonderful.

Up until this weekend, I had to go all the way to D.C. or Baltimore’s Inner Harbor to get them. But no more…

Friends, Corner Bakery has finally opened.

Corner Bakery Cafe opens in Columbia MD

I’ve been waiting for this day for months, ever since touring the Metropolitan Downtown Columbia before it had opened, thanks to my Clark Kent job working for a real estate guru – we got an inside peek as a part of our short-lived Howard County podcast. I really miss podcasting. But I digress; there’s FOOD to talk about!

The menu at Corner Bakery is like Panera meets Starbucks meets local café: a conglomeration of sandwiches, salads, pastas, flatbreads, soups, and even breakfast, along with coffees, teas, smoothies, and other beverages.

I have to admit, I was a bit confused at the menu options, but the staff was more than happy to help me decipher it, even in the midst of opening weekend chaos. Not only can you order individual items as entrees, but there are millions of combos and trios that allow you to basically make your own tasting plate. I’m definitely going to love this feature once I get used to it; I love having a lot of variety of flavors and textures on my plate.

Another major plus to the menu? Calorie counts are right there in front of you, for every single item. They pride themselves on having over 100 food combinations under 600 calories, which is pretty awesome.

I opted for a Trio combination, made up of D.C. chicken salad, chicken tortilla soup, and southwest chicken flatbread sandwich. Each item was tasty. I especially loved the kick from the pickled jalapeños on the flatbread.

Mr. E enjoyed the spicy Asian pork sandwich, served on a toasted French roll. He opted for the side of baby carrots over potato chips. I actually overheard someone at another table commenting, “I don’t need more baby carrots in my life; I’ve got enough at home” which gave me a chuckle. I myself am glad they offer that healthy alternative.

Corner Bakery is the (wait for it) corner resident of the commercial space housed underneath the Metropolitan Downtown Columbia apartments, right next to the Mall in Columbia. There’s also a Mod Pizza, a unisex barber shop, and coming soon – a European Wax Center(??).

I’m excited to try Mod Pizza soon – it’s like Chipotle for pizza. Individually-sized pizzas with dozens of topping combinations you can add on – as many toppings as you want, for the same price. Bring on the weird flavor combinations! For those craving a safer alternative, there’s a pre-determined menu of classic combinations, too.

I’m loving the latest additions to Downtown Columbia, though I do have to admit – I am more than pissed about the decimation of the trees around Merriweather Post Pavilion. You can’t even recognize the intersection of Little Patuxent and Broken Land Parkways anymore. It’s really kinda sad.

I guess it’s the price you have to pay for easier access to raisin pecan toasties.
